The Royal College of Music

The Royal College of Music is the world’s top performing arts conservatory[1]. It nurtures gifted musicians from all over the world, many of whom are at the forefront of musical life across the globe as soloists, composers, orchestral performers, musical directors, arrangers, teachers, and artistic leaders. The RCM is situated in the South Kensington district of London, directly opposite the Royal Albert Hall.

Opened in 1883 by the then Prince of Wales (later Edward VII), The Royal College of Music has trained some of the most important figures in British and international music, including composers and performers such as Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten, Michael Tippett, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Leopold Stokowski, Sir Hubert Parry, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Neville Marriner, Dame Joan Sutherland, Sir Thomas Allen, Dame Sarah Connolly, Tarik O’Regan, Lord Lloyd Webber, Sir James Galway, Anna Meredith MBE, Louise Alder, and Mark-Anthony Turnage.

Regular visiting artists include Sir Thomas Allen, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Alina Ibragimova, and Lang Lang. Recent honorary doctorates include Sir Antonio Pappano, Jonas Kaufmann, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Roger Norrington, Sir Bryn Terfel, Steve Reich, and Maxim Vengerov.

RCM-verified teachers have been selected by the RCM and are among the most skilled music teachers in the world.

Through Forte, you can access four levels of RCM-verified teachers:

  • RCM professor

    These professors are members of the RCM instrumental and vocal faculties, who teach the RCM’s most advanced students at undergraduate, masters, and doctorate levels. They are musicians with worldwide reputations, accustomed to working with the most talented students of each generation to unlock their artistic potential.

  • RCM Junior Department teacher

    These teachers are educators in RCM’s Junior Department, the prestigious pre-college programme offering advanced musical training to talented young musicians between the ages of 8 and 18. They are all professional performers or composers who offer the highest standards of instruction and coaching, specializing in younger learners.

  • RCM alumni teacher

    These teachers are graduates of the RCM’s undergraduate, masters, or doctorate level programmes. As graduates of one of the world’s most selective music schools, they are among the highest achieving musicians of their generation. Only RCM alum who have completed training as music educators can receive this level of certification on Forte.

  • RCM student teacher

    These teachers are currently enrolled in the RCM’s undergraduate, masters, or doctorate level programmes. They are among the most promising young musicians in the world. Only RCM students who have completed training as music educators can receive this level of certification on Forte.
